Cup Series : HURLEY COVERS THE FIELD AT CALIFORNIA

A total of 16 cars took the green flag on Tuesday night at California. Unfortunately shortly after the drop of the green flag, the yellow was already out on lap 1 when the #97 of Adam Wyatt made slight contact with the #12 of Rick Rans. Luckily for the fans, this was only a tease of all the excitement coming up since they will be seeing a total of 8 cautions later on.
After the little incident on lap 1, the drivers took it as a warning which led to a cautious clean run straight to the first round of green flag pit stops. Shortly after the majority of the cars made their pit stops, Darnell Godin who was making a return to the wheel of his new #14 Bacardi Silver Dodge Charger got loose re-entering the track and got into the #99 driven by Paul Paulin. Paulin was able to continue with no major damage but Godin had to sadly park it for the night.
On the restart on lap 35, Daytona winner Bryan White suffered an engine failure which would afterwards cause him to drop from 1st to 8th in the series standings. Under caution, the field wowed up suddenly for the pace car and as a result, several competitors made contact and a few ended up with major damage.
On lap 44, the #88 of Jon Storey got loose and forced the #43 of Dale MacDonald to make hard contact with the wall causing a big wreck ending the defending champ Mike McCullough’s chance of winning back-to-back spring races at California. The NBVRL sponsored #17 driven by Jim MacLeod and the #97 of Wyatt were also involved in this wreck, ending their chances of victory.
On lap 49, a similar accident occurred when Jeff Gilmore in his #57 got loose involving the #28 of Clarence Robinson and the #53 of Vince MacDonald into a wreck.
On lap 72, just when everybody was expecting an exciting green flag finish, Gilmore gets into the back of the #13 of Ray Scott causing the last yellow of the night. Roger Hurley #33, the pole sitter, in his Via Rail sponsored Chevrolet sailed is way to victory while defending champion Jared Meade in the #98 and André Suley in the #52, were having a great fight for the second spot which ended in a photo finish.
Meade took home 2nd and Suley had to settle for 3rd. Paulin and Robinson complete the top 5 respectively.

Truck Series : ROBINSON WINS SEASON OPENER AT DAYTONA

With a rumour that the winner of the truck race at Daytona would receive a die cast of their truck, 17 racers showed up on Thursday night. The fast laps that the drivers were turning in practice was sign that the first truck race of the season would be exciting.
The race got off to a clean start but the yellow flag would wave on lap 8 when Ray Scott in the #13 would bounce off turn 2 wall and come down the track into the #57 driven by Jeff Gilmore. Both trucks received minor damage but were able to continue.
When the drivers got the green flag to restart, the fans would see lots of side by side racing and green flag pit stops. However, the yellow flag came out again on lap 39 when the #12 of Rick Rans got into the side of the shiny #43 of Dale MacDonald. Trucks slowed to avoid the wreck, but the #85 driven by our fireman Mike McCullough got into the rear of the #88 of Jon Storey while trying to slow down. Bryan White in the #1 would take to the grass to avoid the wreck, but would end up hitting the side of the spinning #85.

After pitting for tires and gas, some drivers were asking themselves, will this go green to the checkers? It was not to happen.
On lap 46 Brad Spillman in his unsponsored #317 got loose going into turn 1. Mike McCullough in the #85 drifted up the track to avoid the spinning #317 and got into the #33 of Rog Hurley, bringing out the yellow flag.

The yellow flag would wave shortly after the restart when Peter Seymour in the #8 truck would touch the rear of the Jeff Gilmore in the #57 getting him a little loose. Jeff tried to save it but he slid down the track and was hit by our ambulance driver Bryan White in the #1. While this was happening Ray Scott in his #13 got into the side of the #8 and bounced back down into the #12 driven by Rick Rans.

With only 5 laps left when the race went green, the fans were on their feet because everyone expected an exciting finish. The race ended under yellow after the big one happened on lap 58. Rookie driver Bob Prosser in the #5 truck was having a great race until lap 58 when he got into the rear of the #88 in turn 2. The #88 went up the track into traffic and just about eveyone got into it. This left the four trucks out front to race back to the yellow for the win. Bryan White in the #1 managed to miss everyone and make it a pack of five trucks racing back to the line.

Clarence Robinson in the #28 got a great push from the #97 of Adam Wyatt on the back stretch and managed to cross the line before the #98 of Jared Meade. Clarence Robinson wins at Daytona.

Cup Series : COT - HURLEY AND MACLEOD WIN THE DUELS AT DAYTONA
Thought's were that with Roger Hurley in the #33 VIA Rail Chevrolet winning the pole for the 500 last week, he would be a little conservative in his duel last night. Critics were wrong, Hurley led ever lap from green to checkered in a caution free in the first of two duel races last night.
Jim MacLeod, in the NBVRL sponsored Chevrolet, didn't have the same luck in the second duel. With an early push from Bryan White (#1) and Dale MacDonald (#43), MacLeod took the lead and never looked back. With MacLeod's win in the second duel, that places him outside row 2 for the start of the 500 next week.
Stay tuned for the rest of the 500 line-up.
